What is a Fertility Window?
A fertility window is the specific time during your menstrual cycle when it is biologically possible to get pregnant. While ovulation is the moment an egg is released, the window is wider because sperm can live inside your body for several days.
Most women have a fertility window of about 6 days: the five days leading up to ovulation and the day of ovulation itself.
How Many Days is the Fertile Window?
The fertile window typically lasts 6 days. This timing is based on two factors:
- Sperm Life Span: Up to 5 days in fertile cervical mucus.
- Egg Life Span: Only 12 to 24 hours after release.
When is the Best Day to Conceive?
While the window is 6 days, the peak fertility days are the two days before ovulation and the day you ovulate. If you time intercourse during these 48-72 hours, your chances of conception are at their highest.
Ovulation vs. Fertile Window: What's the Difference?
Many people use these terms interchangeably, but they are different:
- Ovulation: The release of the egg. This happens in a split second.
- Fertile Window: The total time during your cycle when pregnancy can occur if you have intercourse.
